Horse Welfare Conference to Counter Horse Slaughter Conference

Is Horse Slaughter Coming to a Neighborhood Near You?

Oklahoma City, OK. (R4H) – Equine advocates from across the nation will participate in a press conference and live webcast, the Summit of the Live Horse, aired from Oklahoma City on 04/03/2012 to address the explosive issues surrounding Horse Slaughter and Wild Horses and Burros.

The Summit of the Live Horse Press Conference
Holiday Inn, Will Rogers Airport
4401 SW 15th St.
Oklahoma City, OK 73108
12 – 1PM CDT
Tuesday, April 3, 2012

Late last year, three lawmakers in Washington, D.C. (Rep. Kingston, Sen. Blunt and Sen. Kohl), legalized Horse Slaughter in the U.S. by removing language from an Agriculture Appropriations bill, which had prohibited federal funds from being spent to inspect horse slaughter plants. President Obama signed the bill into law, and in doing so ignited a heated anti/pro-horse debate, which crosses all of the socio-economic demographics of the U.S.

While last year two conferences representing opposing sides of the coin took place in Las Vegas, this year’s Equine battleground is set to play out in Oklahoma City no farther than one city block away from each other.

In many states including Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Montana, Washington and Oregon, the horse slaughter faction is beginning to lay the groundwork to open horse slaughter plants to provide horse meat for human consumption. In several states, legislators are sponsoring bills that would turn their respective states into hospitable environments for foreign investors to open horse slaughtering operations by affording them potential tax incentives and by violating U.S. citizen’s First Amendment rights by sheltering the horse slaughter business from lawsuits.

“Any responsible horse owner, as well as any concerned tax payer, should be petrified about what could happen next”, says Simone Netherlands, Director of Respect4Horses and also the organizer of the Summit of the Live Horse Press Conference.

This press conference will bring directors and equine experts from the largest animal and horse welfare organizations together as one united voice for the future welfare of the American Horse, both domestic and wild. Participants include, but not limited to, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), The Cloud Foundation, Respect4Horses, Animal Rescue Unit and Wild Horse Freedom Federation.

Will horse slaughter be coming to your neighborhood? Do we need horse slaughter in America? Can horse slaughter be made humane? Is horsemeat toxic? Does horse slaughter solve abuse and neglect? Does horse slaughter encourage over breeding?  Will our  wild horses be slaughtered? Will it stop horse slaughter across our borders?

DO YOU THINK FOR YOURSELF? Or Do You Follow The Barney Crowd?

Children that grow up in a society that teaches them about reality will face a better future, as these kids will become independent thinkers, and not become victims of a tyrannical reign of corporate sabotaging, corruption and greed. If EWA is the source for this education, our kids are lucky. If our kids take on our values that we teach, we are lucky!

If you belong to those in a Barney crowd who deny their kids the opportunity to learn the reality, and want to deny them the truth in order to serve your own value system, go ahead. We are not telling you not to. But we are not the Barney crowd alarmists who seek redemption in the form of manipulating a good cause that teaches responsibility, compassion and humane alternatives.

Tennessee Rep. Frank Nicely is back this session with another effort to smooth the way for a horse slaughterhouse to open in the state. House Bill 3619 just cleared the House of Representatives Agriculture Committee and could be scheduled for a vote by the full House at any time.

Until the committee hearing the bill simply directed the agriculture commissioner to post and keep current statistics and other information required to be collected about equines and to provide that information upon request to the Tennessee Equine Association.

Harmless enough, except that during the committee hearing on March 13, 2012, Nicely introduced amendments under a new declaration that “the General Assembly intends to encourage the location of equine slaughter and processing facilities in Tennessee that meet…requirements”. The new provisions approved by the committee would make it more difficult to challenge issuance of a permit for a horse slaughter facility by requiring a bond equal to 20% of the estimated cost of building the facility or operational costs, if those can be determined.  Venue would be limited to the court where the facility is located and not also where the defendant can be found or does business.

A challenger would be required to pay the slaughter facility’s legal fees and court costs if a court finds the suit was without merit or brought for an “improper purpose” including harassment, delay or interference. If a plaintiff does not prevail ultimately after obtaining an injunction, the plaintiff “is liable for all financial losses the facility suffers” as a result of an injunction halting  operations.

The bill is similar to a Montana law passed in 2009.

If you live in Tennessee, find your state legislators here. Write or call now and urge them to vote NO on H.B. 3619.

WILD BURRO PROTECTION LEAGUE MARCH FOR MERCY ~ Protect the Wild Burros from Mass Annihilation

Wild Burro Protection League is holding an event on April 7 to bring more awareness about the burros in Big Bend Ranch State Park to the Governor of Texas.

Less than 300 wild burros remain but Texas Parks and Wildlife intends to kill these nationally protected burros to the “maximum extent possible”. The national protections do not extend to this State-held land. What Texas is doing may be legal, but we think its an atrocity.

This horrid policy is carried out quietly, behind the scenes, with efforts to keep visitors to the Big Bend Ranch State Park from realizing wild burros are there and wild burros are being killed. We want the world to know how Texas chooses to kill their own living legacies of natural, cultural and historical heritage of their State, the region and America.

En Garde! The Three Muskateers of HorseSlaughter.

(How Many Senators Does It Take to Slaughter a Horse)

YO!  Brogan’s in the Senate and the House

Brogan Horton with Animal Rescue Unit will be pounding the halls of Congress! It’s time for some real education and facts in Congress and the Senate!

With the right fund raising, she will have educational meetings in over 200 offices and will pass out over 200+ lobby packets of information about the Wild Horse and Burro round ups and the horrors of horse slaughter! This will be a marathon event, with over 30 meetings a day set up!

If you would like to volunteer or donate, please consider it. She needs $600 total including the cost of the lobbying packets- about $400 – and the other $200 is for cab fare ~ it takes too long to run to the next meeting in a different building! All personal expenses (hotel, food etc.) are being paid out of her own pocket. Please Click HERE to Donate.

This is the time to STAND UP for the horses, as their fate in this country grows more and more grim! The event will be held in conjunction with Equine Welfare Alliance’s lobbying event coming up soon! Please email for specific dates as we don’t want to advertise them as to not give ”the other side” our dates so they can’t show up in the same offices! It’s time to Put Up! These horrific acts need to stop, NOW!
